Chilled Ponds and Whaler Nation merge with Peninsula

The Peninsula Prowl (PYHA) is proud to announce some exciting changes forthcoming for the 2023-2024 season.

With the exciting acquisition of the Hampton Roads Iceplex, now Chilled Ponds at Yorktown, the PYHA will be merging with the Hampton Roads Whalers to offer more ice time and programming opportunities for growth and development of hockey on the Peninsula.  The PYHA name will merge under the Whaler Nation umbrella (LTP-Rec-Travel-Juniors) and we will have the full weight of the knowledge and experience of the Whaler Nation staff from Mr. Cavanagh, Brad Jones and Colten Teubert, on down as we push to grow our program.

"Operating in the role as club President of the Peninsula Prowl Youth Hockey Association for the last two seasons, we are very pleased to join a larger body of passionate coaches, players and families in the pursuit of this great sport of ice hockey,” stated PYHA President Mark Ross. “In combining our efforts, our new group of skilled players can attain new heights of competition and success abroad as Whaler Nation. We look forward to the future together with you as we grow hockey participation at Chilled Ponds Chesapeake and Chilled Ponds at Yorktown."

Our PYHA house teams will now compete in the WN Rec Hockey League and face competition from the teams in Chesapeake. We will offer our players the opportunity to play travel level hockey with the Whalers. We will also offer opportunities for our players' growth and development during the spring and summer months with the Spring Development training (April 4-June 7) as well as summer skills (July 5-August 23) at Chilled Ponds at Yorktown.  Our players who enroll early for next season will receive a 2-day hockey camp as part of their enrollment and bonus Happy Hour sessions starting in July. Our Mite rec players will also have the opportunity to participate on a Mite travel birth year team that will compete in 4 CBHL Mite jamborees to prepare them to enter full season travel hockey when they become squirts.

“We are excited to work with a new ownership that prioritizes hockey,” stated PYHA Hockey Director, Paul Clegg.  “We are glad to hear that recreational youth hockey will continue to be offered along with travel.  We look forward to working with new leadership to build on the success that the PYHA has had over the past 25 years and build it to an even higher level with travel hockey and other opportunities. Youth sports are so important for children to learn lifelong lessons, and there is no greater sport to teach them than hockey. We are also excited about renovations to update the rink and make it much more family friendly.  Families spend a lot of time at the rink, so having a clean and fun facility for siblings to run around in along with coffee for mom and dad to purchase during those early morning games is top priority.  Today is a great day for hockey in Yorktown!”

For our newest players, HockeyU will be transitioning into Hockey Academy starting April 15th at Chilled Ponds at Yorktown. This program’s structure will allow for growth and development of our newest players to prepare them to join one of our Yorktown Whalers Rec teams at the end of August.

“This is an exciting day for hockey in our area,” stated Whaler Nation executive director Brad Jones. “I look forward to working with Mark and Paul, as well as the rest of the great people on the Peninsula to help grow the sport of hockey.  We want to give them the ice time as well as the tools and resources necessary to achieve this objective.  The renovations planned for the facility will give the rink a much-needed facelift and fresh new feel and experience while visiting CP at Yorktown.”

Some exciting renovations will be occurring at Chilled Ponds at Yorktown that will improve the facility and experience for our families, such as new LED lighting, new ceiling, new entryway, renovated lobby, expanded spectator seating options, and a new bar and grill.  Renderings of the renovations will be released soon and construction will start in the spring without hampering spring and summer programming.

You will be able to enroll in programming at the front desk at Chilled Ponds at Yorktown.  Online registration links and full details on 2023-2024 programing will be released soon.
